Law firm picked to handle voting equipment issue
The Indianapolis Star 18 October 2005
Franklin An Indianapolis law firm will represent Johnson County in any action that might be taken against a voting equipment company.
The County Commissioners on Monday signed off on an agreement with Kroger Gardis & Regas the same firm that represented Marion County in a recent settlement with the company and will pay the firm $285 an hour.
Johnson County election officials are seeking compensation from Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software stemming from software certification problems dating to 2003.
The county signed a $2.4 million contract with ES&S in 2002 for touch-screen voting machines, a new technology required as part of the federal Help America Vote Act, which aims to eliminate punch-card ballots by Jan. 1.
But problems plagued the relationship from the start, with ES&S providing software that had not been certified by the Indiana Election Commission for the 2003 general election.
As a result, residents have used punch-card ballots and optical-scan machines for the past three elections.
