Voting machine problem causes delay

DARIEN — A problem with a voting machine memory card caused a delay in election results reporting Tuesday night for the village of Darien.
The card failed mid-morning, Walworth County Clerk Kim Bushey said. Her office “redownloaded” the village card, and voting continued, she said.
Any votes cast while the card was down were placed in a locked box in the voting machine, Bushey said.
When polls closed, village election workers were unable to send in the results electronically, again because of a memory card problem, Bushey said. At Bushey’s request, the village faxed the paper copy of the election results, and she entered them manually.
Memory card problems are not common, but they happen often that the clerk’s office staff know how to deal with them, Bushey said. Entering results manually also is a common occurrence, she said.
