STAUNTON — After just five votes, a voting machine in Ward 5 had to be shut down earlier today because of a malfunction, but Chief Officer Joe Baugher said the snafu only caused a few minor voting delays.
"We were told to shut it down," Baugher said. Two machines were left to carry the load.
Despite the faulty voting machine, Baugher said Ward 5 at Memorial Baptist Church was headed for a 45 percent turnout, a good 10 percent higher than expected.
Baugher said weather, media attention and local races were all factors in the high turnout.
