ATM maker Diebold had neglected to install a security patch available from Microsoft, SecurityFocus reported, quoting Diebold's director of software engineering.
SecurityFocus may have been tipped off by a Diebold news release on Nov. 19 announcing a partnership with security vendor Sygate Technologies "to Provide Powerful Endpoint Security for Windows(R)-Based ATMs and Networks Worldwide."
The companies will put Sygate firewalls on new ATMs and offer them as an upgrade to existing Windows-based ATMs.
"With security becoming an increasing priority as ATMs migrate to Windows and TCP/IP networks, Sygate and Diebold are working together to ensure Diebold ATMs are equipped with the highest degree of protection against misuse and malicious intent," the news release stated.
The release did not mention the Nachi intrusion.
