A public test of the voting machines' Election Day software, which is required by state law, failed Friday. When a straight-party vote was cast, the screen did not show that a candidate was ed for Precinct 3 commissioner, Elections Administrator Debra Stacy said.

However, his name will appear on the ballot Tuesday. The county, which uses touch-screen voting machines, was able to fix the problem Thursday, when the omission was discovered.

Unusually high demand and a printing order that wasn't filled fast enough caused the San Diego County Registrar of Voters to run short of absentee ballots this week. About 5,000 photocopies were mailed out instead, said Registrar of Voters Mikel Haas.

Mr. Arthur Edwards, the widower of her oldest friend from the 4th grade, accompanied her on the short ride to the Library; he waited in the car for her to finish her brief civic obligation. A native Texan, Mrs. Blankenship appreciated the mild autumn weather. Growing up in Texas, the daughter of two strong parents, had left its mark on her. She had learned self discipline from both of them, along with a strong sense of honesty.
