Investigators searching for nearly 3,500 missing ballots from the Aug. 26 election say they have located a "substantial number"— and perhaps nearly all — of the unaccounted-for ballots. First, auditors have discovered electronic evidence that 110 ballots from voters at a Delray Beach precinct weren't included in election night results. Those votes also weren't included in totals from a recount. Second, auditors verified that there are 139 more paper ballots on hand at elections offices than the number of ballots reported cast on election night. The combination of the findings means there could be 249 more ballots than were counted on election night - though that estimate could change before an audit is finalized this weekend.

D.C. Election Glitch Blamed On Equipment (WA DC) Story Here Archive |
Published:Thursday, September 11, 2008 Nikita Stewart and Elissa Silverman Washington Post 11 September 2008
D.C. election officials blamed a defective computer memory cartridge yesterday for producing what appeared to be thousands of write-in votes that officials say did not exist. The glitch caused initially inaccurate results in several contests, including two high-profile council races, and created a chaotic scene at Board of Elections and Ethics headquarters Tuesday night. Even with an extremely low turnout, there was no clarity well after midnight, when 50 people, among them candidates and their attorneys, crowded into the election board lobby and demanded answers from officials.

Published:Wednesday, September 10, 2008 DCist 10 September 2008 During election night, it is the Board’s standard practice to generate unofficial results reports, and to thereafter conduct an internal audit process to verify the accuracy of the results contained in these reports. During this process, it was determined that one defective cartridge caused vote totals to be duplicated into multiple races on the summary report issued by our office. The Board immediately caught and addressed this error, as is reflected in the last unofficial results report issued on Election Night.

He said he would provide an answer to LL. As for what exactly went wrong with the cartridge, Murphy declined to say, pending an investigation by the board and the system’s manufacturer.

The scene: Palm Beach County, where the search continues for thousands of missing ballots that were apparently cast on Aug. 26. At least one race is heading to court. More may follow. It's not quite the infamous Bush versus Gore recount of 2000. There are no hanging chads, no presidential race at stake. But once again, Palm Beach County is ground zero for electoral chaos, lawsuits and bad publicity for Florida's long-suffering election system.
