Published:Wednesday, August 27, 2008 FLORIDA TODAY • August 26, 2008 A glitch with touch-screen voting machines in about 50 precincts has slowed election returns tonight, leaving the county with only about 58 percent of precincts for more than hour. The results are now almost all in after a lengthy delay.

A glitch with the optical scanning machines used Tuesday night had the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections busy Wednesday. When workers tried to count absentee ballots on election night, the optical scan machines would not communicate with the server. So more than 10,000 absentee ballots had to be hand-counted one-by-one starting Wednesday morning, and they're still counting them late Wednesday.

An hour after the polls closed in Hillsborough, Johnson told reporters that his vote counting system had developed a computer problem that was preventing it from posting the tallies electronically — and he blamed Premier Voting Solutions. "I haven't been able to get a straight answer from Premier, but I will by the end of the night," he said. "I expect them to fix this issue. We've paid a lot of money. My staff has done a great job.'

Results from yesterday’s primary in Hillsborough County were slow to be released. Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson blames a software issue with the new optical scan machines manufactured by Premier Election Solutions. Johnson is not the only one critical of the Premier machines. In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, the Director of Government Affairs for Premier Kathy Rogers said her company did not provide adequate documentation for their GEMS software to Hillsborough County to avoid the problem.

A number of Northport voters were turned away from the polls because their names were left off the master lists at their polling places. A coding glitch by the Board of Registrars caused some voters to be left off the master list at their polling locations, said City Clerk Rosemary Nichols.

Election officials noticed the problem at the end of the day when they received blank memory cards that were supposed to have recorded the votes. They corrected the problem by finding the paper printout the machine makes to create a physical record of each vote, Balink said.

Faulkner County Justice of the Peace Jimmy Bryant requested some weeks ago that Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels seek more information concerning the problematic May 20 election. He found his request had been granted Friday evening when he found a summary of what went wrong on election night among his mail. According to a summary of the election night foul-up signed by deputy secretary of state Janet Harris and dated Aug. 12, election commissioners received an error message that something was amiss on election night but failed to heed the warning.
