CHARLESTON, W.Va. A programming glitch is forcing election officials in Kanawha and 18 other counties to retest their optical scanning voting machines on the eve of the general election. Early voting begins Wednesday for the 2008 election. But Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said a programming error in the state's automated voting machines could have resulted in incorrect results for at least one state race.

On the eve of early voting, problems with the general election ballots are causing Kanawha County officials to conduct an emergency test of its voting machines. On Monday, the Secretary of State's office notified the County Clerk's office of a problem in the programming cards used in the M100 machines.

This testing was conducted Thursday after the Putnam County Board of Elections fired Director Virginia Price. The firing was sparked by a notice from the Ohio Secretary of State's Office that the county's voting software was upgraded without the state's authorization

Sons said a glitch in the Vermilion Parish Clerk of Court’s electronic voting system prevented District 3 voters in Delcambre from voting for him or for Derise, both Democrats, from the time the polls opened at 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. “It locked me and my opponent out from District 3 until 1 p.m.,” Sons said. “However, it did allow people in District 2 to vote for me and my opponent.”

On Monday, the machines weren't ready because the county discovered Sunday it had the wrong password needed to upload its ballot information to the state commission for approval.

The county already has 765 Danaher electronic voting machines in its inventory. Dean said polling places with 1,400 or fewer voters need two machines, 1,401 to 1,900 voters mean three machines and more than 1,900 voters require four machines.
